| Shaddai
According to Jewish tradition the name
Shadai comes from the word "dai" which means "enough." The "Sh"
beforehand is a prefix which means "the one who." G-d is called
Shadai because "He told the world 'enough!'" He set boundaries to
this world, causing that it should be finite and limited unlike many
of the spiritual worlds. |

| The name Shaddai
(Hebrew: שַׁדַּי) Iben Ezra
maintains that the name "Shaddai" is derived from the Hebrew word "shoded"
-- which means "destroyer." This name describes G-d's ability to
destroy the Laws of Nature (which He Himself created) at will. Thus,
"Almighty" would be a correct translation of "Shaddai." |
| And G-d spoke to
Moshe and said to him; "I am Hashem! I appeared to Avraham to
Yitzchak and to Yaakov as El Shaddai, but with My name Hashem I did
not make Myself known to them. Moreover, I established My covenant
with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their
sojourning in which they sojourned. (Shemos: 2-4) |
| "What a shame about
the ones who are lost and are not to be found. Many times I revealed
Myself to Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov as El Shaddai, and they
never questioned Me, nor did they ask, 'What is Your Name?' I told
Avraham, 'Arise, and walk the length and width of the land that I am
giving to you.' (Bereishis 13:17). Yet, when he wanted a place to
bury Sarah, he couldn't find anything until he purchased land for
four hundred shekels!" (Sanhedrin 111a) |
