Free - The Power of Speech - "This is a merit of great important... especially in light of the state of our brothers in the Land of Israel. Through the merit of careful speech, may we become worthy of the redemption of Israel and the coming of the Moshaich Tzidkeinu, speedily..."

The power we wield when we speak is far beyond what we can perceive. We think we're only exchanging a few words, when in fact, we're moving worlds.

Chofetz Chaim: A Daily Companion
The concepts and laws of proper speech as formulated by Sefer Chofetz Chaim By Michael Rothschild Rabbi Shimon Finkelman
[about this Tape]  [about this Tape]

When one explores the mitzvah of proper speech, and the concomitant transgression of loshon hora, one fact becomes eminently clear: we are not dealing with business as usual. The cosmic repercussions of this issue are so intense that they have literally shaped the destiny of our people. It is hard to imagine that any religion would make so dramatic a statement as to say that G-d himself has chosen not to sit in His Home on this earth, that He has been in exile for 2,000 years, because of words that come out of our mouths. The Torah tells us that Shmiras Haloshon, keeping the laws of proper speech, has the power to bring blessing into our lives. That's because loving and speaking well of our fellow man is the Torah's prerequisite for serving God. Learning the laws of Shmiras Haloshon every day in small portions was the method that the Chofetz Chaim recommended for every person to learn and observe this crucial mitzvah. He guaranteed that, by making this commitment, one would merit Hashem's help in keeping this mitzvah. What we will find as we explore the philosophy and laws of loshon hora is that appear to be benign pieces of information are actually the tremendously potent, key factor in our relationship to Hashem and in living our lives as Jews. Loshon hora is so powerful, in fact, that it can erase the merits of a lifetime of Torah learning and mitzvah observance.

Just as the negative consequences of speech can be so vast, the positive consequences of proper speech are even greater. The Vilna Gaon says that proper speech is the single biggest factor in determining one's portion in the World to Come. The Chofetz Chaim tells us that adherence to these halochos empowers our davening, validates our Torah learning, accesses G-d's Divine Protection and invokes the many blessings G-d, in His kindness, is waiting to shower upon us.

Another form of constructive speech is that which prevents or breaks up a relationship that is harmful to at least one of the parties. It is correct to suggest that someone distance himself from a person or persons who may have a negative influence upon him. Similarly, it is proper to inform a parent that someone may be having a negative influence on his child. All preconditions must, of course, be fulfilled -- including verification of facts and constructive intent (see Days 42-50). If the information is not firsthand it may nevertheless be conveyed, provided that it is clearly being presented as secondhand information. With regard to the requirement of accuracy of the information, the Chofetz Chaim suggests that exaggeration may be permissible if that is the only way to convince the person or parent to end the relationship. The Chofetz Chaim adds that it is imperative to explain why conveying the information does not constitute speaking loshon hora, especially when speaking to a child.

Chofetz Chaim on Aggadeta
A wide-ranging commentary on the Talmud's perspective on life situations, exemplary character traits, and learning to fear G-d. A guiding light for elevating oneself and the entire world.

With the Commentary Yad Dovid More than one hundred years ago Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kagan, who was destined to become the leader of his generation and one of the greatest Torah scholars of our era, set out to gather the laws of loshon hora into one comprehensive volume. The title of his work became the name by which he himself was known and revered throughout the world, Chofetz Chaim. In his penetrating genius he perceived this aspect of Halachah as a central key to end the exile and bring about the Redemption of Am Yisroel. The work he produced not only became a classic of Torah scholarship. It sparked a mass movement among the Jewish People to rectify and improve the matter of guarding speech, a movement which continues to gain momentum to this day. Though this work has inspired scores, if not hundreds of books in many languages, it is almost astounding to note that the original itself has never been translated into English. The present volume is the first fruit of a project undertaken to fill this gap.
