John Howe’s version of Jack and the Beanstalk traditional telling of the tale.  Jack and his mother are poor and then one day Jack is told to go to market to sell the cow.  Jack disobeys his mother and sells the cow to an old man for some magic beans.  Overnight the magic beans grow into a giant beanstalk that reaches to the heavens.  Jack then climbs the beanstalk three times bringing back gold and other valuable items.

Until one day the giant, whom Jack is stealing from, follows Jack down the beanstalk. Jack triumphs over the giant by cutting down the beanstalk and killing him, allowing Jack and his mother to live happily ever after.
