If
greeted with the phrase "Shalom Aleichem" - "peace be with you" - the
proper reply is "Aleichem Shalom". This is the traditional Jewish way of
saying hello and good-bye, as well as a familiar Friday night hymn
welcoming the Shabbos Angels.
It is also the pen name of Solomon Rabinovitz (1859-1916), the great
Yiddish author and humorist whose stories of Tevye der Milchiger, Tevye
the Dairyman, became the basis for the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Along
with Shalom Jacob Abramovich (1835-1917), Also known as Mendele Mokher
Seforim (Mendele Moykher the bookseller), and Isaac Leib Peretz
(1852-1915), he created modern Yiddish literature, Rabinovich was also
know as the Yiddish Mark Twain. After Rabinovitchz's immigration to the
United States, Twain met him in New York and said, "I am the American
Shalom Aleichem." His granddaughter, Bel Kauffman, wrote Up the Down
Staircase. |
