One of the most in demand pianists of
the past few years, Uri Caine makes his
Knitting Factory/JAM Records debut with
his newest release . His collaborator on
this new project is famed Sephardic/Morrocan
singer Aaron Bensoussan. Uri has been
making music professionally for almost
twenty years; his recent contributions
to the Winter & Winter label have been
wildly adored by fans and critics alike.
Aaron has been captivating audiences
with his modern approach to Sephardic
music since his arrival in this country.
With this new project, they are joined
by a diverse ensemble of musicians. The
result is a startling reconciliation
between ancient tradition and
post-modern trail blazing. The musicians
on the album include DJ Olive, Adam
Rogers, Gilad, and Emanuel Mann. The mix
is eclectic and the resulting sound
covers turf from synagogues to jazz
halls to DJ booths. Uri shocked critics
and classical music lovers alike when he
released his version of Mahler pieces.
Judging from the press' reaction to this
new ensemble, he will do it again.
Aaron regularly draws large audiences
with his performances and has brought
Sepharidic music to the hilt of
experience in synagogues around the
country. The music is centered around
Uri's piano compositions. His
wonderfully spirited and tactile way of
approaching the keyboard is complimented
by Aaron's inspired vocals and fresh
interpretations of the Sephardic
traditional melodies. Olive swirls beats
and atmospheric samples in and out of
the rhythmic spaces. Gilad propels the
rhythms forward. Emmanuel holds the
bottom together with his concrete bass
playing while Adam's guitar playing
flows fluidly and with the lilt of a
breeze. If you thought that a jazz
pianist would have a hard time
interpreting classical music, wait until
you hear what he does with the mix of
traditional Sephardic music, a DJ, and
jazz. Certainly one of the most
interesting releases this year from the
JAM label, this album will introduce
audiences to that other side of Jewish
music, the Sephardic sound. |
